DUBAI – The organising committee of the Dubai 24 Hour Walkathon have announced a brand new route for the second running of this unique event, which will be flagged off from the Sunset Mall on November 23.
After a successful debut event last year, which saw His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein take part to raise awareness about diabetes, the unique Dubai 24HR Walkathon, organised by Dubai Sports Council, is back.
The format is still the same – teams of 20 will be divided into four groups of five each – but the route has changed for this year.
In 2016, the Walkathon was flagged off from Zabeel Park; this year, its starts at 7.30am on November 23 from the Sunset Mall on Jumeirah Beach Road and finishes 24 hours later at the same place after four loops of a dedicated 25km route past some of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks, including the Dubai Canal.
Starting from behind Sunset Mall, the participants will walk down the Beach Road, in the direction of Burj Al Arab, before making a U-turn from Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The route will then take them down to the edge of Dubai Canal, into Al Safa Park and then to Marasi Business Bay, from where they turn back for the Sunset Mall.
Each group of five walkers will be flagged off at set times. The first group will be flagged off at 7.30am on November 23, the second at 13.30, the third at 19.30 and the fourth and final at 01.30 November 24.
There will be six hydration stations along the route, while food and entertainment kiosks will be available at rest stations every 5km. Ambulances with registered nurses, police escorts and marshals will be onsite to ensure the safety of everyone, while ample parking spots will be available for both participants and spectators.
